Hello
folks, hope you are having a wonderful day? Before I get to the topic at hand,
I just want to say, SEASONS GREETINGS or MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Today, I want to talk about the X-Mas Factor. We are in a period where everyone
wants to shorten long words to make things easier to pronounce but the sole
purpose of this article is, there are some words that should not be just
“pushed behind the queue” because doing that will make the meaning the word
useless.
Let
us take a look at the word X-Mas. In mathematical terms, X symbolizes the
“Unknown Variable” in an equation. Why should we replace Christ with X; as if
we don’t know who and what we are celebrating? This is so annoying when I think
about it.
For
those of you who don’t know, here is the meaning of Christmas. Christmas is a
holiday set on the 25th of December every year to celebrate the
birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Various historians have given various theories
about the exact date of the birth of Jesus, but as Christians we choose the 25th
of December to remind ourselves why we are called Christians. We don’t put
unknown variables to other holidays, so we shouldn’t put unknown variables to
Christmas.
I would love to give you biblical references
to how we were called Christians but that will be for another time. The point
of this piece is to plead with my readers (Christians and Non-Christians) to
stop replacing Christ with X. I am afraid that if we continue using X instead
of Christ, we would lose the meaning of the holiday and see it as a time of the
year where we get to indulge ourselves in all manner of vices. Although this
has started happening; where Christmas is known as a holiday where teenage
pregnancies are at their highest peak and other unsavoury practices.
Please
let us take the time and think about what Christmas really means to you and me
before we desecrate its importance.
I
look forward to reading your comments on the box below.
